Sie wurde nach der Ankunft von Ruggero d&#8217;Altavilla \u00fcber mittelalterlichen Geb\u00e4uden errichtet und nach schweren Erdbeben (1542, 1613, 1693) mehrmals wieder aufgebaut, bis sie zwischen dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert sein heutiges Aussehen. Architektonische Meisterwerke wie die szenische Treppe (bis zu 260 Stufen) und die 62 m hohe Turm Fassade unterstreichen seine Theatralik. Im Inneren bilden ein lateinisches Kreuz mit 22 korinthischen S\u00e4ulen, Stuckarbeiten, Fresken, eine monumentale Orgel und Werke von Bernardino Nigro, Paladini, Cane und Bildhauern aus Gagini einen beeindruckenden k\u00fcnstlerischen Parcours. Die Bodensonnenuhr aus dem Jahr 1895 und die \u201eSanta Cassa\u201c erh\u00f6hen den kulturellen und historischen Wert. Als Ort des Glaubens und der Identit\u00e4t ist sie jedes Jahr Schauplatz feierlicher Prozessionen, insbesondere zu Ehren des Heiligen Georg, des Schutzpatrons der Stadt.
