Construida sobre edificios medievales tras la llegada de Roger de Hauteville, fue reconstruida varias veces tras grandes terremotos (1542, 1613 y 1693), adquiriendo su aspecto actual entre los siglos XVIII y XIX. Obras maestras arquitect\u00f3nicas como la imponente escalera (de hasta 260 escalones) y la torre-fachada de 62 metros realzan su teatralidad. En su interior, una planta de cruz latina con 22 columnas corintias, estucos, frescos, un \u00f3rgano monumental y obras de Bernardino Nigro, Paladini, Cane y escultores gaginianos crean un recorrido art\u00edstico sumamente evocador. El reloj de sol de 1895 y la \u00abSanta Cassa\u00bb (Santa Cassa) realzan su valor hist\u00f3rico y cultural. Lugar de fe e identidad, acoge solemnes procesiones cada a\u00f1o, en particular la de San Jorge, patr\u00f3n de la ciudad.
