Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite sur des b\u00e2timents m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e de Ruggero d&rsquo;Altavilla et, reconstruite \u00e0 plusieurs reprises apr\u00e8s d&rsquo;importants tremblements de terre (1542, 1613, 1693), elle a pris son aspect actuel entre le XVIIIe et le XIXe si\u00e8cle. Des chefs-d&rsquo;\u0153uvre architecturaux tels que l&rsquo;escalier panoramique (jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 260 marches) et la tour-fa\u00e7ade de 62 m\u00e8tres de haut soulignent son caract\u00e8re th\u00e9\u00e2tral. \u00c0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur, un plan en croix latine avec 22 colonnes corinthiennes, des stucs, des fresques, un orgue monumental et des \u0153uvres de Bernardino Nigro, Paladini, Cane et des sculpteurs de Gagini cr\u00e9ent un parcours artistique impressionnant. Le cadran solaire au sol de 1895 et la \u00ab Santa Cassa \u00bb augmentent la valeur culturelle et historique. Lieu de foi et d&rsquo;identit\u00e9, elle est chaque ann\u00e9e le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de processions solennelles, notamment celle de Saint-Georges, le saint patron de la ville.
